With The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releasing later this week, I want to crack open a particular chestnut that is bound to spread across the internet soon enough. I am, of course, talking about weapon degradation, a mechanic in Breath of the Wild that sees swords, spears, bows, shields, sticks, and basically anything Link can use to kill things break after enough use. If you throw them at enemies in their final moments, weapons disintegrate, granting you a hefty damage bonus in exchange for your favourite broadsword. Some people love it. Some people hate it. And I get it.

Another popular fan theory is that of Demise's reappearance in TOTK . First introduced in Skyward Sword , Demise serves as the final boss of that game. Known as the Demon King, Demise once commanded an evil army in seeking out the powerful Triforce, but was defeated and sealed away by the goddess Hylia and the legions of surface dwellers who worshiped her. Afterward, he took the form of The Imprisoned, a giant, scaly monster. In Skyward Sword , Link repeatedly drives him back in his beastly form until the game's main antagonist, Ghirahim, steals zelda tears of the kingdom tips's soul and uses it to resurrect Demise. In the end, Link defeats him one final time, but that doesn't mean that Demise's return in TOTK __ is impossi

The second two timelines occur if Link is successful in defeating Ganondorf, but depend on whether he is a child or an adult going forward. This is because (spoilers) Zelda sends him back to his child self at the end of the game. Therefore, there is no hero to protect Hyrule in the adult timeline – Link has been zapped to the past – and Hyrule must be flooded in order to seal Ganon when he reappears, leading to the events of The Wind Wa

Every other facet of Tears of the Kingdom ’s story is based purely on speculation derived from the aforementioned murals. One mural shows a mysterious being surrounded by seven tear-shaped icons, potentially the titular Tears of the Kingdom. Additionally, the style of the carvings matches the aesthetic of the Zonai Ruins from Breath of the Wild , structures left behind by an ancient tribe of magic wielders known as the Zonai. While the title of the game is ominous, Tears of the Kingdom won't be exceptionally dark because of its E10+ ESRB rating, though it's expected that Hyrule's potentially unpleasant past with the Zonai will be explo

One of the most exciting additions to Link's repertoire of abilities in Tears of the Kingdom is Fuse, which allows him to attach items to his weapon or shield to enhance them. These objects improve stats, add elemental or status affliction effects, or add completely new properties at times. The range of objects you can add is vast. From rocks to fruit, there is a staggering variety of potential equipment aids in this game, and that's before you get into the effects of combining your equipment with Zonai devices! Of course, you'll have to complete a shrine to acquire the ability.

When Link emerges from the Shrine of Resurrection onto the Great Plateau, he is a sloppily dressed amnesiac twink with little awareness of where to go or what to do. Tutorials and hints are peppered through the first few characters you meet and shrines you solve, but otherwise Breath of the Wild is all about * around and finding out. Marching into battle with rusty weapons and gawking in surprise when they break is a failure on your part, and the opening area is built in a way that deliberately educates you, administering the tough love required to claim Breath of the Wild as your own. You grow more confident after figuring out how long certain equipment lasts and how best to make use of it, thinking ahead in most situations to when you’ll need to switch out your arsenal or conjure up a new strategy on the fly. Take it away, and combat falls victim to a foundational simplicity it otherwise supersedes.

Longtime Zelda fans have taken all this in our stride by now. We know that time travel is different in Zelda to most popular media, and if you zip to the past, you don’t affect the future you came from. Instead, the future you travelled from will continue without you, and you create a new timeline from where you appeared. You can’t pull a Marty McFly in Hyr
